India is the second largest producer and biggest consumer of Sugar in the world. The Indian Sugar production during the last few years has remained 24-26 million tons. The country, also produces 11 million tons of molasses as by-product which is mainly used as a raw material for production of alcohol.

The annual installed capacity of the distilleries in India is approx. 6 billion liters per annum including grain based distilleries. The Government of India has made it mandatory to blend 5% ethanol in petrol and is encouraging futher enhancement in blending to the extend of 10%. As such the demand of ethanol for 5% blend itself is approx. 1.56 billion liters and the same shall double in the years to come when 10% blend shall be mandatory. The gap between demand and supply needs to be bridged by using alternate raw materials, by implementing latest fermentation techniques and through improved productivity measures.

The Ethanol Cell is aimed to assist and create awareness among general public, distilleries, new entrepreneurs, state and central Govt. organizations etc. with regard to various issues related to ethanol production, reduction in the water usage and environment friendly effluent disposal to achieve zero pollution.

  • To create awareness in the sugar industry about value addition through ethanol production and its importance for making EBP a success.
  • To provide technical knowledge and assistance to various distilleries for their productivity enhancement in ethanol production.
  • To enhance institute-industry interaction for addressing problems of the distilleries and carrying out collaborative research for their overall development.
  • To identify alternate feed stocks other than molasses for production of ethanol.

  • To provide technical assistance for setting up new units and expansion of existing ones.
  • To provide technical details with respect to process of production of Rectified Spirit, Extra Neutral Alcohol and Ethanol etc.
  • To provide technical details of various Effluent Treatment Techniques.
  • To render technical advice on various other matters related to ethanol production.
  • To assist Central and state Government's with regard to various issues and policies related to ethanol production.
